Originally published in 1858, The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table is a series of personal essays ostensibly recounting the boarding-house breakfast-table conversation of ³the Autocrat² and his table-mates ‹ the Professor, the Landlady, the Schoolmistress, the Divinity Student, and so on. The book is both a timeless depiction of a witty, urbane, and genial critical intelligence, and a vivid record of 19th-century America in general, and Boston intellectual circles in particular.
About the Author
Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. (1841-1935) served as chief justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Court and as an associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. He was nick-named the "Great Dissenter" because of his many dissenting opinions. Holmes is also the author of Kent's Commentaries on the Law (1873) and "The Path of the Law" (1897).

Dated stuff

This is fine writing. The only problem is that it is, of course, dated. The subject matter is often trivial so relating it to our times is a leap, but for those of us who are not intimidated by the style of the nineteenth century this is a delightful read

A very entertaining read. I was prepared for this book to be somewhat dry and dted, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that the insights were very entertaining and original, not unlike Dickens.

Thoughts and the Times From 1850

An interesting range of thoughtful opinions, imbedded in a look at American life in the 1850s, by the father of a future Supreme Court Associate Justice. Part of the charm of this book is in the fact that at that time horses had been the only means of human-assisted transportation for the last few thousand years (with the exception of the new-fangled railroad which was changing the world). Electronics were not even imagined. Automobiles were 50 years into the future.
