About the Author
British author and artist Beatrix Potter (1866 1943) wrote and illustrated many children's books in the late nineteenth century. She is best known for her enchanting tales and endearing drawings of woodland creatures in human clothes, most notably Peter Rabbit.

Advanced, but excellent

I purchased this CD set at the beginning of summer, so that my children (then aged 4, 7, 9) would have something new and different to listen to in the car as we drove about on summer outings. When the first CD started, I thought, "Wow, I knew this was unabridged, but the vocabulary is really advanced", and with the British colloquialisms and some of the archaic speech from Potter's time, I thought the kids wouldn't stay interested. BUT THEY LOVED IT!!! They would act out stories at home, ask to listen at home, too, and even quote parts or sing some of the diddies from the stories. Remarkable. A teaching moment for me to not underestimate my children's capacity to LISTEN and ENJOY.

Unpleasant to hear, hard to use

I got this CD collection to replace the excellent Claire Bloom reading we have on audiocassette - BAD IDEA! Nadia May (not her real name) rushes through the stories, her character voices are shrill or harsh, and the 3-CD set is broken up into 2-minute segments, not by stories - Disk 2 actually begins in the middle of the Tale of Mr. Jeremy Fisher. Also, there is NO index!! Apparently, Ms. May has won awards, and one of her techniques is to NOT read through the story before recording it, so she's as surprised as the listener. Maybe that works with other books, but not here - there's no sense of pacing, setting the scene, playing up the humor, or building the drama. I gave it one star because her voice is otherwise lovely and clear. I should have saved my money to buy another set of the Claire Bloom audiocassettes!
